Productivity Increase of Machining Processes through Predictive and Digital Manufacturing
Prof. Dr. Ir. Bert Lauwers Decaan Faculteit Industriële Ingenieurswetenschappen KU Leuven"
Decaan Faculteit Industriële Ingenieurswetenschappen
KU Leuven

The complexity of today’s manufacturing processes is ever increasing. More complicated parts, often fabricated in advanced materials, have to be manufactured first time right. In order to reach these objectives, digital manufacturing tools and computer models of machining processes, known as digital twins, can give a better understanding of these processes allowing optimization and consequently a productivity increase

How to become a Factory of the Future: rethinking production in a smarter and more future-proof way
Erik de Zeeuw
Project Engineering Manager
Materialise

For Materialise, the emergence of Factories of the Future is not a phenomenon we’re waiting for. It’s a vision we’re realizing today, and of which our ‘Factory of the Future Label 4.0’ is proof. This label, awarded by industry platforms Agoria and Sirris, is given to companies that rethink their production in a smarter and more future-proof way. In order to become a Factory of the Future, a manufacturing company must undergo seven transformations in areas as diverse as technological advancement, workforce engagement and inter-company collaboration. Erik will talk about how Materialise drove these transformations and how our technologies and solutions can help other companies realize their own Factory of the Future.

Smart Technology helps workers growing in their job
Bart Decloedt
Manager Sales & Innovation
Mariasteen

Due to changing customer needs and market demands, the manufacturing industry is faced with more product diversification and higher quality requirements. For sheltered workplaces, the range of repetitive simple work is evolving towards more complex activities. On the other hand, the potential of incoming employees turns out to have far fewer job possibilities than before.
Mariasteen’s case shows the challenges to create sustainable work through technology accepted by employees with disabilities. Automation with collaborative robots and digitization through interactive projected work instructions offers Mariasteen opportunities  to create new business with traditional industry.

Towards Smart Manufacturing: From Flexible Assembly Production to Product’s Digital Signature
Abdellatif Bey-Temsamani
Project Manager
Flanders Make

Industry 4.0 is transforming current manufacturing practices. Big data, advanced robotics, industrial connectivity, …. All are impacting the manufacturing machines and processes with the goal to make production processes more flexible to deal with large variety of products, digitize all manufacturing steps to trace back relevant historical information, and create a digital signature of generated products that contains related information throughout its lifecycle.
Key enabler technologies that would allow this transformation are emerging and becoming more and more available: new sensor’s generation with smart connectivity, big-data compatible processors, collaborative robots, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, condition monitoring, …. When properly implemented in a manufacturing ecosystem, these technologies will transform conventional manufacturing into smart manufacturing.
In this presentation, we will showcase some practical examples where these topics and their impact on manufacturing are clearly highlighted.
Some of these examples are related to Smart Clamping for (CNC) machining centers, digital signature of an additively manufactured product, smart fleet with interconnected condition monitoring systems, digital instruction and their usage by collaborative robots.

Introducing a stainless solution that lasts
Jan-Ove Eriksson
R&D and Product Manager
Uddeholms AB Sweden

After 15 years of research, our R&D department developed a steel; combining high strength and stainless, Uddeholm VANAX SUPERCLEAN. The product combines the corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel AISI 316L, with a hardness up to 60 HRc which opens new opportunities/new applications. Existing materials were not sufficient in regards of corrosion and wear resistance. So we are ready  for the future.

Towards functional 3D printing: Hybrid manufacturing platforms at the VUB
Julien Ertveldt
R&D Engineer
Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Driven by our own research in smart structures, a hybrid manufacturing platform based on two Direct Energy Deposition machines combined with subtractive processes are built in-house at the department of Mechanical Engineering (www.avrg.be) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Those machines should produce high precision metallic parts with integrated sensing. By presenting the beyond the state-of-the-art in hybrid manufacturing, we show how we think to manufacture the parts of the future with integrated structural health monitoring. Being both an end user for additive manufactured parts, as well as getting into the role of the machine tool builder, we obtained a unique insight in the current capabilities and limitations of additive and hybrid manufacturing. What kind of machine do we need to produce those parts of the future, and is current technology ready for this? Will Additive Manufacturing 2.0 be Hybrid Manufacturing?

Hoe metaalprints opspannen om na te bewerken? Ook onafhankelijk van de bouwplaat.
Tom Scharlaken
Lector - Onderzoeker
Vives Hogeschool
